A DOLL’S HOUSE

SYNOPSIS

"A Doll’s House" is a short documentary film shot in Santurce, Puerto Rico, that highlights the work of multidisciplinary artist Alfonso Muñoz Alma. The film focuses on the LGBTQ+ community and women as foundational elements in Alfonso’s life and artistic practice. From an early age, Alfonso found an ally in his mother, creating an environment that encouraged him to question, through his imagination, the world around him as a queer child. His childhood was marked by the creation of dollhouses and fantastic scenes using objects found in the trash. His ability to rethink and reimagine found objects and spaces translates, in adulthood, into a reinterpretation of heteronormative visual culture in his art. The experiences of living as part of the Puerto Rican diaspora in New York also inform his multidisciplinary work. Through his art, Alfonso challenges the narratives of Puerto Rican visual culture by introducing women and figures from the LGBTQ+ community into the pictorial and narrative spaces of traditional art—spaces that have been historically dominated by men..
